The Bahama Banks: a "living" Fossil-environment
نویسنده
چکیده
The Bahama Banks represent an environment of carbonate sedimentation widespread in the past but extremely rare today. Its occurrence presents the geologist with the opportunity of learning firsthand about geologic processes once prevalent on the earth's surface, but he has been slow to take advantage of the opportunity and slower to use the Bahama story in the classroom. Some literature on the Bahamas is reviewed, and pertinent information on geologic history, sediments, and ecology is summarized for classroom use.

Ahermatypic Coral Banks: Living and Fossil Counterparts
Reef-like structures referred to as banks are produced by framework-building ahermatypic scleractinians in cool water at various depths, usually below those of hermatypic shallow-water reef corals. The distribution of Holocene banks is closely related to the ecological requirements of the ahermatypic corals. Fifteen major regions of bank development are known today in the Atlantic and Pacific a...

Diverse habitat use during two life stages of the critically endangered Bahama Oriole (Icterus northropi): community structure, foraging, and social interactions
Our ability to prevent extinction in declining populations often depends on effective management of habitats that are disturbed through wildfire, logging, agriculture, or development. In these disturbed landscapes, the juxtaposition of multiple habitat types can be especially important to fledglings and young birds, which may leave breeding grounds in human-altered habitat for different habitat...
